Mardi Gras is coming up in less than a week and do I have a sandwich for you! The Muffuletta sandwich is a traditional New Orleans style grinder and is very popular during their annual Mardi Gras celebration. In fact, it’s popular all year round. It’s filled with several meats and cheeses and finished off with an olive salad or spread as the condiment. It definitely fulfills that savory craving with the saltiness of the meat and the oil used in the olive salad. This would be an easy lunch or dinner paired with a hot bowl of gumbo.

So let’s get started!

First, you want to grab your ingredients: a round boule bread loaf, capicola, mortadella, salami, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese and the olive spread or salad of your choice.

Next you want to slice your loaf of bread lengthwise and spread olive oil on both sides of the bread.

Once both sides of your bread are covered with the olive oil, it’s time to start layering with the meat. First you want to start with the capicola.

Next top with the salami.

Next, top with the mortadella.

Now it’s time for the cheese. Start with the provolone cheese.

Next is the mozzarella cheese.

Lastly, the olive salad. Start in the middle and spread evenly to the edges.

And there you have a sandwich. The Muffuletta Sandwich. A MONSTER sandwich.

I have never had a muffuletta sandwich before but I have seen many recipes on Pinterest and thought I’d try it for Mardi Gras this year.

It definitely reminded me of a Italian hoagie just without the tomato or lettuce on it. The olive salad definitely gives that salty, savory taste to it. It’s delicious.

The meats, the cheeses and the olive salad pair very well together.

This is definitely a sandwich I would have if I went on a trip to New Orleans.
