So once again I’ve jumped on that food trend bandwagon! This time, on a holiday-inspired one – the hot cocoa bomb! These have become pretty popular this holiday season and I figured why not take a stab at it. These hot cocoa bombs have everything you need to enjoy a hot cup of cocoa. Especially on a cold, winter night. They would be great to give as gifts, whether it be for a family member or your child’s teacher. Dress the hot cocoa bomb in festive wrapping or a holiday tin and voila! You’ve got yourself the perfect gift to any foodie’s heart 🙂
These can be be made in so many different flavors. They’re so versatile. Traditional hot chocolate, peppermint flavored, s’mores. They can even be decorated for a specific theme. And this is where I went with mine. Like I wrote about in a previous post, I’ve been watching a lot of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the Jim Carrey live-action version, this holiday season. So with this new food trend happening right now, I figured why not make Grinch hot cocoa bombs. And that’s exactly what I did.
To make these bombs, the most important thing you will need is a silicone mold. You can find these easily on Amazon or your local craft store, such as Michael’s. I bought mine from Amazon. Here’s the link to the molds. You will also need green-colored candy melts, hot cocoa mix, marshmallows and candy heart sprinkles. If you can’t find green-colored candy melts, buy white ones and dye them green with food coloring. And that’s all you need.
To start these bombs, you’ll need to microwave your candy melts. Initially, “thaw” them for 1 minute then in 30 second increments, microwave until completely smooth. If you were unable to buy green candy melts, this is the time where you would add the food coloring.
Mix until completely combined. Add more drops until your desired color.
Next, take your mold and using a spoon, dollop about 2 tablespoons of the candy melts into each cavity. Then using the spoon, spread the candy melt on all sides until the whole cavity is covered.
Once the cavities are all covered, place in the fridge to firm up for 30 minutes.
Once the molds have firmed up, remove from the fridge and “pop” the spheres out of the molds.
Add the hot cocoa mix and marshmallows.
Melt the leftover candy melt in the microwave again. Take the other half and swirl the edges around in the melted candy and attach to the half filled with the mix and marshmallows.
To seal each sphere, you can take a warm spoon and smooth the edges all the way around. Another tip you can do is add some candy melt to the edges and dip in sprinkles, which is what I did.
Now we know that these are Grinch hot cocoa bombs so you have to add The Grinch’s heart to each ball. Using a little bit of the melting candy, add a small amount to each ball and place a candy heart on top.
When ready to use, simply place a bomb in a festive coffee mug and pour warm milk over the bomb until you see it start to melt and open up. You will see all the mix and marshmallows pop out. Stir until completely combined. Then enjoy!
